I incidentally came across this impressive work of paper engineering when he was kind enough to run our ‘help desk’ through a test and used this photo as part of the testing process. Thank you Brian for sharing your work and I hope the rest of you readers find it as amazing as I do!
If you click thru to enlarge the bottom photo, you can find his copyright which shows how to reach out to Brian in the event his talent can be used to enhance your project.

Announcement envelopes are designed with side seam construction and contemporary square flap. This is a popular choice for social and professional mailings, stationery, photographs, greeting cards, small booklets, and much more. Interesting fact to know, A-Envelopes and Baronial Envelopes can share common sizes – example: 5-1/2 Bar is the same dimension as A2, the defining differences are the flaps and the seam construction. If these factors are not important to your project, then best to move forward with the envelope offering the possibilities of making your project a success.

Our latest farewell is a sweet good bye to Serpentine, Malachite and the original shade of Lapis Lazuli. Don’t be alarmed, Lapis Lazuli is still present, it just received a slight face lift and we are calling it the NEW Lapis Lazuli. Also, we at paper-papers are saying good-bye to Emerald for a time. We might be swayed to grab it back up if the demand is high, but as for now, we are letting Emerald rest in peace. (updated 8/2013 ==> Emerald has been revived and now active again – some other colors have be discontinued, View current post Cordenon makes new friends)

Cougar by Domtar is one of our most popular selling paper and envelopes. It has proven over the years to be a quality product at a reasonable cost. Additionally, Cougar has transformed itself to be more than an offset printing sheet. As it keeps up with paper trends and market demands, it is offering varying weights and finishes. If you are trying to find the Classic Cougar Sheet yet find yourself a little overwhelmed, see the grid below. This is a simple grid to assist with weight, finish, opacity, brightness and bulk factor (caliper). (Note that Cougar envelopes are converted from Cougar Text 24/60 or 28/70).
We are stocking the lovely EURO FLAP envelope in this universal White and Natural. Our envelopes are converted from Brockway 32/80 Felt Finish Papers and present themselves as a rich, quality product. The White shade is not a bright color but more of a milky white. Paper is on our floor to match these envelopes exactly. Hit our live chat if you have any trouble finding the matching paper or card stock.
Cougar A-Size envelopes are offered in a variety of sizes along with two shades and two finishes. With such a vast arrangement to stock, we are not offering the 32/80 Text (118 gsm). We recommend using 28/70 (104 gsm) as this is offered in all sizes and is only slightly different. Cougar envelopes are and have been a popular product for years and offered great quality at reasonable prices.
If you were using 32/80 smooth finish, transitioning to 28/70 vellum finish has an average caliper difference that is minimal. Actually, when looking up the average caliper, these have the same results, 28/70 vellum average caliper 6.0 and 32/80 smooth average caliper 5.9 – This is only addressing the ‘bulk’ factor – but possibly that may have been your only concern. You can view all the Cougar Envelopes we offer with one simple click. Also, before switching grades, view our paper weight chart for Cougar Paper to best determine your project needs.
If you are considering a grade transition and your project requires smooth finish, yet thicker, we are suggesting Neenah Classic Crest Solar White or Natural. We do offer all A-Sizes with 32/80 smooth finish.
Over the years one comes across a product that seems to have many identifiers and can cause much confusion when trying to buy or discuss a purchasing need. Catalog and Booklet envelopes seem to fall within this class of confusing terms. Open end, open side, catalog, booklet, large envelopes… these are a few of the terms thrown around when looking at this larger constructed envelope. I suppose to cause even more confusion, technically these styles do not require ’large’ construction, they can start at somewhat smaller dimensions.
Catalog envelopes start at sizes 6×9, although if you include the scarf or coin envelope, it can be quite small sizes available. Booklet envelopes can start at dimensions close to 4×6 with many custom envelopes being converted with booklet styles – the dimensions vary with many options to purchase or convert.
Before proceeding further, it is best to identify the most common factors that classify the term catalog or booklet envelopes.
Catalog envelopes are open end, meaning shortest side has the flap, also center seam is the most common, yet catalogs are also converted with side seam construction. Either way, one seam instead of two.
Booklet envelopes are constructed with two side seams and open side, meaning longest side has the flap.
Both these products are found in varying colors, basis weights and gumming options. The most universal of both would be white wove and kraft with these being common amongst general mailings of catalogs, annual reports, journals and other popular inserts.
More explanation and sizes are explained within our individual listings or additional information pages on our site. Also stay current with other envelope sizes by viewing our envelope size chart or by shopping envelopes smaller to larger.
A1 Envelopes which are technically listed among Baronial Envelopes and properly named a 4-BAR Envelope. A1 is a common name but not technical. 4BAR is the industry name and we use A1 along side as to correspond to other A-SIZE envelopes offered on our site.
The dimensions of A1/4BAR envelopes is a North American standard amongst envelope converters. If you want a square flap, you would generally order as “4-Bar Square Flap” and if you need a pointed flap, this is specifically a 4-Bar Envelope. We at Paper-Papers use the term interchangeably since the dimensions are the same and the photo next to the products, along with the description, will describe the flap or envelope style.
This envelope is the smallest member of our Announcement Envelopes, many times referred to as Response Envelopes, 4Bar Envelopes or Wallet Envelopes. Noting this to be the smallest announcement envelope allowed by the Postal service, many designers choose this size as a popular option for “replies” (RSVP) of formal invites.
A1 & 4 BAR (same size) - Envelope Dimensions:
Inches: 3.625 x 5.125 (3-5/8 x 5-1/8)
CM: 9.2075 x 13.0175
MM: 92.075 x 130.175
Enclosure choice is not as strict as the actual dimensions. Truly finalized by the designer, the enclosure simply needs to be dimensions smaller than the envelope itself. A general rule of thumb is allowing .25 inches in height and width. As many creative hearts already know, the bulkier the enclosure, the more room necessary to properly insert, close and seal. Listed below is suggested enclosure dimensions to assist toward a successful creation!
